Pune News: Pipeline Burst During Excavation In Kothrud Wastes Thousands Of Litres Of Water
Pune, June 15, 2026: Thousands of litres of drinking water were wasted after a major water pipeline burst during excavation work being carried out by Mahavitaran near Itasha Society at Dukkar Khind in Kothrud on Saturday, raising fresh concerns over administrative negligence amid Pune’s ongoing water shortage.
The incident occurred during excavation activities undertaken by the electricity utility department. The damaged pipeline led to a significant loss of potable water and disrupted water supply in several nearby localities.
Following the pipeline rupture, water supply to Ved Bhavan, Swami Vivekanand Colony, and surrounding areas was immediately suspended to facilitate repair work. Officials from the Water Supply Department stated that the restoration process would take several hours and that water supply would resume at low pressure once repairs were completed.
The incident comes at a time when Pune is already facing severe water scarcity and residents are struggling with reduced water availability. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also implemented an alternate-day water supply schedule in several parts of the city due to declining water reserves.
Residents pointed out that a similar incident occurred just four days ago in the Bhusari Colony area of Kothrud, where a water pipeline was damaged during stormwater drainage work. Citizens have criticized authorities for failing to learn from previous incidents and allowing such repeated damage to critical public infrastructure.
With every drop of water considered valuable during the ongoing shortage, residents have expressed anger over what they describe as the careless functioning of government departments and contractors. Citizens have demanded strict legal action against the responsible contractors and departments, arguing that repeated notices are insufficient to prevent recurring incidents that result in the wastage of public resources.
The latest pipeline burst has once again highlighted concerns over coordination among civic agencies and the need for greater accountability during excavation and infrastructure projects in the city.
