Pune, June 19, 2026: What was once promoted as a peaceful residential neighbourhood in NIBM Annexe, Mohammadwadi, is today being described by residents as a lawless stretch where late-night eateries, food trucks, reckless racers and alleged narcotics users have taken over public spaces, leaving hundreds of families trapped in a nightly cycle of noise, fear and sleeplessness.

Residents of Archana Kohinoor Glory Society and neighbouring housing societies allege that the main road outside the residential complex has effectively transformed into a night-time activity zone where rules are openly flouted and enforcement is virtually absent.

According to residents, several hotels, roadside eateries and food trucks allegedly continue operating until 4 am and even 5 am, attracting crowds long after most residential areas in the city have fallen silent. They claim the gatherings bring with them blaring music, shouting, honking, littering and reckless behaviour that continues until dawn.

The most alarming concern, residents say, is the emergence of the road outside the society as an alleged racing corridor. High-powered motorcycles and luxury cars are said to use the stretch after midnight for high-speed runs, with engines revving and modified exhausts shattering the silence of the night.

“Every night feels like we are living next to a racetrack rather than a residential neighbourhood,” said Avinash Singh. “The noise is unbearable. Children wake up frightened, elderly residents cannot sleep and working professionals begin their day exhausted. This is no longer an occasional disturbance—it has become a way of life.”

Residents allege that the situation has worsened due to inadequate policing and poor civic infrastructure. Several streetlights on parts of the road are reportedly non-functional, creating dark pockets where citizens claim suspicious activities frequently take place.

Many residents expressed concern over alleged narcotics consumption in the area. They claim groups of individuals gather in parked vehicles and secluded corners during late-night hours, creating an atmosphere of insecurity.

“We are increasingly seeing unknown people loitering around till early morning. There are serious concerns regarding suspected drug abuse and illegal activities. Residents do not feel safe,” alleged Saurabh Gupta.

The issue, residents say, extends beyond mere inconvenience. Families claim they are being deprived of a basic quality-of-life right—the ability to sleep peacefully in their own homes.

“Food trucks and crowds remain active till dawn. Loud conversations, vehicle movements and continuous disturbance have become routine. Residents are paying the price while violators operate without fear,” said Manju Joshi.

Questions are also being raised about enforcement.

In one of the most serious allegations levelled by residents, some claimed that personnel from Kalepadal Police Station were allegedly accepting “hafta” from establishments operating beyond permissible hours. The allegation could not be independently verified, and no evidence was provided to support the claim.

“The perception among residents is that violators have become fearless because they do not expect action. Whether these allegations are true or not, authorities must investigate and clear the air,” said Sanjeev Mehta.

Residents further alleged that individuals with criminal backgrounds and “shady characters” are increasingly frequenting the area during late-night hours.

“Women and senior citizens are afraid to step out after dark. A residential locality cannot be allowed to become a gathering point for anti-social elements,” said Suhasini Kelkar.

Srikant Kulkarni pointed to the lack of functioning streetlights, saying, “Dark stretches have become an invitation for unlawful activities. The civic administration must immediately restore all streetlights and improve surveillance.”

Citizens have demanded immediate late-night raids, verification of operating permissions of food trucks and eateries, strict action against illegal racing, investigation into allegations of narcotics abuse and a comprehensive review of law-and-order conditions in the area.

When contacted, senior police officials said they would examine the complaints raised by residents.

“We will look into the allegations and take appropriate action wherever violations are found,” a senior police official said.

For many residents, however, assurances are no longer enough.

They argue that unless visible and sustained enforcement begins on the ground, NIBM Annexe risks acquiring a reputation not as a premium residential destination but as a zone where commercial interests, reckless behaviour and alleged criminal activity are allowed to flourish at the cost of law-abiding citizens.
