Pune: PMC Commissioner Meets IMD Experts To Assess El Niño's Impact On Rainfall
Pune, June 19, 2026: In view of the potential impact of El Niño weather conditions, Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Shivajinagar on Thursday to review rainfall forecasts and water management strategies for the city.
During the meeting, the Municipal Commissioner held detailed discussions with senior IMD officials, scientists, and meteorological experts regarding expected rainfall during the upcoming monsoon months of June, July, August, and September. The discussions focused on anticipated rainfall in Pune city and the catchment areas of the Khadakwasla dam system, which supplies drinking water to the city.
Experts from the IMD provided insights into seasonal weather forecasts, rainfall patterns, and the possible effects of global climate phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña on rainfall across Maharashtra, particularly in the Pune region.

Officials reviewed various forecasting systems and scientific data that could assist the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in planning water distribution and reservoir management more effectively.
According to the IMD, rainfall activity is expected to improve in July, and there is a strong possibility of good rainfall in the dam catchment areas. Based on current assessments, PMC officials said adequate planning has been undertaken to ensure that Pune residents do not face any shortage of drinking water.

However, the civic administration urged citizens to use water responsibly and avoid wastage. Officials warned that misuse of water or violations of PMC’s water usage regulations could attract penalties. Legal action may also be initiated against individuals found wasting water.
Appealing to residents, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said, “Considering the potential impact of El Niño conditions, citizens should use water carefully and responsibly. Every individual must contribute towards water conservation by avoiding unnecessary wastage. Saving water is the need of the hour.”
Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair and Disaster Management Department officer Ganesh Sonune were present during the meeting. Representing the IMD were Sai Krishnan (Head, CRS), Dr. Srijit O.P., Dr. Satyaban Bishoi Ratna, Dr. Sudip Kumar, A.D. Tathe, and Uday Shende.
