Pune, July 10: Pune residents may soon get relief from the ongoing alternate-day water supply schedule, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is likely to withdraw water cuts following a significant rise in reservoir levels. A final decision is expected at a review meeting scheduled for Monday, July 13.

The PMC had introduced alternate-day water supply from June 15 after the water stock in the Khadakwasla dam system dropped to 3.90 TMC, with officials aiming to ensure sufficient supply until the end of August.

By the end of June, the combined water storage had declined further to 3.56 TMC due to inadequate rainfall in the catchment areas. However, heavy rains over the past week have dramatically improved the situation, with reservoir levels rising to nearly 17 TMC. Weather forecasts also predict continued good rainfall through the rest of July and August, increasing the likelihood that the dams will fill to capacity this monsoon.

In view of the Ashadhi Wari Palkhi procession, the PMC had already suspended the alternate-day water cuts temporarily from July 7 to July 12 to ensure uninterrupted water supply for residents and pilgrims.

Municipal officials will now review the latest reservoir levels and rainfall forecasts before deciding whether to continue the restrictions or restore regular daily water supply across the city. The decision is expected to be taken at the July 13 meeting.

Officials will also consider the need to maintain adequate storage space in the dams to accommodate further monsoon inflows while ensuring a reliable water supply for the city.

Meanwhile, with reservoir levels nearing last year’s figures, many residents have urged the civic administration to permanently withdraw the water cuts and resume normal daily water supply.
