Pune Social Activist's Complaint Leads to FDA Action; Kondhwa's Irani Tea Café Sealed Over Expired Food Stock
Pune, July 10, 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune, detected expired food ingredients during a surprise inspection at Irani Tea Caf on Salunke Vihar Road in Kondhwa Khurd on Thursday evening, leading to the immediate destruction of the expired stock to safeguard public health.
The inspection was conducted at around 6:30 pm on July 9 by Food Safety Officer Priyanka Joshi Rajgolkar, along with Food Safety Officers D.B. Ghodke and Snehal A. Yenare, under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act. The inspection was carried out in the presence of an independent panch witness, Gorkhanath Arjun Ingale (35), a resident of Kondhwa Khurd.
The café’s owner, Hamid Reza Attarbashiyan (67), was present during the inspection. FDA officials verified the establishment’s details through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal and explained the inspection process and findings to him.
During the inspection of the kitchen, officials found that several food ingredients used in preparing food had crossed their expiry dates. They also observed that the expired items had neither been segregated nor labelled “Not for Use,” as required under food safety regulations to prevent accidental use.
To ensure the expired products were not reused, the café owner voluntarily destroyed the expired food packets and bottles in the presence of FDA officials and the panch witness. The products were opened, emptied, and disposed of in a garbage bin.
The entire process was documented in an official panchnama prepared by the Food Safety Officer. The document was read out and explained to the café owner and the witness before being signed, confirming that it accurately recorded the inspection and disposal of the expired food items.
