Monsoon Laundry Hack: Why an Occasional Hot Water Wash Can Keep Clothes Fresh and Odour-Free
10 July, 2026: If your clothes still smell damp or musty even after washing, the problem may not be the detergent. During the monsoon, when clothes take longer to dry, using hot water occasionally can help eliminate stubborn odours and keep laundry feeling fresh.
Hot water is more effective than cold water at removing sweat, body oils and detergent residue that can remain trapped in fabric. It also helps reduce bacteria and germs responsible for unpleasant smells, making it particularly useful for towels, socks, gym wear, bedsheets and cleaning cloths.

Another benefit of washing with warm or hot water is that it allows detergent to dissolve and work more efficiently. This helps remove grease, dirt and tough stains more effectively, leaving clothes cleaner and fresher after every wash.
However, hot water is not suitable for every type of fabric. Delicate materials such as silk, wool and certain synthetic fabrics can shrink, fade or become damaged. Always check the garment’s care label before choosing a hot wash.
If you add hot water manually to your washing machine, use warm or hot water instead of boiling water, as extremely high temperatures may damage machines that are not designed for it. If your washing machine has a built-in warm or hot wash setting, it is recommended to use that option.
To keep clothes smelling fresh for longer, remove them from the washing machine immediately after the wash cycle ends and ensure they are dried completely before storing. Regularly cleaning your washing machine can also prevent mould, bacteria and unpleasant odours from building up inside the drum.
An occasional hot water wash, combined with proper laundry care, can go a long way in keeping clothes clean, fresh and free from musty smells during the rainy season.
