Pune, 10 July, 2026: Central Railway has cancelled 14 trains, including three major Pune-Mumbai intercity services, until July 17 as restoration work continues on the landslide-affected Lonavala-Karjat ghat section. The move aims to speed up repairs and ensure passenger safety after heavy rainfall disrupted rail operations earlier this week.

The cancelled Pune-Mumbai trains include the Deccan Queen, Deccan Express and CSMT-Pune Intercity Express. Several long-distance trains, including the Hubballi-Dadar Express, CSMT-Hyderabad Express, Daund-Indore Express and Chennai Egmore Express, have also been cancelled in both directions. In addition, trains such as the Mahalaxmi Express, Jodhpur-Hadapsar Express and Satara-Dadar Express will remain cancelled on selected dates between July 10 and July 17. Eight special trains have also been withdrawn during this period.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the restoration work on Thursday and said the damage caused by the landslide was extensive. Railway officials said advance cancellations were announced to reduce uncertainty for passengers while repair work continues.

According to Central Railway, more than 1,100 personnel along with heavy machinery have been deployed at the site. One of the three tracks has already been restored, allowing limited train movement, while work on the remaining two tracks is underway.

Pune Rail Division PRO Hemant Kumar Behera said only one track is currently operational, enabling limited services between Mumbai and Pune. He added that trains such as the Pragati Express and Sinhagad Express are operating on the route, although schedules may change depending on restoration progress.

Officials also said the closure of two tracks has disrupted the normal banker locomotive system used on the steep Lonavala-Karjat ghat section. To maintain operations, trains are currently being run with two locomotives attached at the front.

The disruption began after a landslide between Thakurwadi Cabin and Monkey Hill following continuous heavy rainfall. Since then, train services between Mumbai and Pune have been affected by cancellations, diversions, short terminations and rescheduling.

The prolonged disruption has caused inconvenience to thousands of passengers, especially daily commuters. Many have raised concerns over overcrowding on the limited trains currently operating and the additional travel costs they have had to bear due to cancellations.

Railway authorities have advised passengers to check the latest train schedules and service updates before travelling, as operations may continue to change depending on the progress of restoration work.
