Pune Weather Update: Heavy Rain Takes a Break; IMD Forecasts Dry Spell for Next 5–6 Days
Pune, July 12, 2026: After experiencing days of intense rainfall, Pune and its surrounding ghat regions have witnessed a sharp decline in precipitation, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting no heavy rain over the next five to six days.
According to IMD scientists, the heavy rainfall recorded between July 1 and July 8 was triggered by a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. The system brought widespread rain to Mumbai, Palghar, Pune and the Western Ghats. However, as the weather system has now moved towards Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, rainfall activity across Maharashtra, particularly in Pune district, has weakened considerably.
Areas that recorded 500–600 mm of rainfall over the past week have seen almost no rainfall during the last 24 hours, indicating a significant change in weather conditions.
Rainfall recorded in Pune district’s ghat areas during the past 24 hours includes:
- Shirgaon – 10 mm
- Davdi – 10 mm
- Tamhini – 12 mm
- Pofali – 12 mm
Just a few days ago, these locations were receiving extremely heavy rainfall, but the intensity has now reduced dramatically.
Meteorologists said the current lull in rainfall is in line with the IMD’s earlier forecast, which had predicted a temporary break in monsoon activity after the recent spell of heavy rain.
Commenting on this year’s monsoon, weather expert clarified that the presence of El Niño does not necessarily mean below-normal rainfall.
“Many people believe El Niño years always result in poor rainfall, but that is a misconception. Rainfall does occur during El Niño years, although its distribution is uneven. This season, parts of North Konkan, West Konkan, Pune and Nashik have received good rainfall, while regions such as Marathwada, Latur and Dharashiv continue to face a rainfall deficit of over 30 to 40 percent,” he said.
The IMD has stated that no heavy rainfall is expected in Pune over the next five to six days, providing temporary relief after a week of intense monsoon activity. However, light to moderate showers may continue in isolated parts of the district as the southwest monsoon remains active over the region.
