Centre Relaxes Solar Cell Norms Till December 31, 2026, Giving Relief To Rooftop Solar Projects
In a significant relief for homeowners, housing societies, and businesses, the Central Government has temporarily relaxed the mandatory use of approved solar cells for solar power installations until December 31, 2026. The decision, announced by the Union Ministry of Power, is expected to help complete several delayed solar projects without increasing installation costs.
Why Was the Rule Introduced?
The government had made it mandatory for all solar systems installed after June 1, 2026, particularly those under net-metering and open access schemes, to use solar cells manufactured only by companies listed in the government’s approved vendor list.
The policy was introduced to curb the import of low-quality and Chinese-made solar components while promoting domestic manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
However, industry representatives said the limited availability of approved solar cells led to delays in project execution and increased installation costs across the country.
What Does the Relaxation Mean?
With the latest decision, applicants installing rooftop solar systems before December 31, 2026, will not be required to comply with the approved solar cell mandate.
The relaxation is expected to benefit:
- Homeowners planning rooftop solar installations.
- Housing societies adopting solar power through net-metering.
- Small businesses and commercial establishments with pending solar projects.
Industry experts believe the move will help accelerate project completion while reducing financial pressure caused by supply shortages.
Rules to Return From January 1, 2027
The government has clarified that the exemption is temporary. From January 1, 2027, all new solar installations will once again be required to comply with the approved solar cell regulations.
Experts have advised consumers planning rooftop solar installations to complete their projects before the year-end deadline to take advantage of the temporary relaxation.
