Pune: Traffic diversions are put in place on an experimental basis at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) by the Traffic branch to ease traffic congestion caused by ongoing metro work. However, the new traffic changes have made it difficult for staff and students to directly enter the university through the circle. Instead, they are supposed take a long U-turn to get into the campus.

The University administration is now demanding the Traffic branch to make a separate lane for students and staff to enter the campus through the circle. Currently, students and staff have to take a right turn from the Sinhagad Gate of Pune Rural Police onto Pashan Road, head towards the Millennium Gate on Aundh Road and then enter the university via the In-gate.

“We demand that a separate lane should be made for students coming to the university to avoid inconvenience. We have already spoken to the Traffic department about this issue,” Dr. Praful Pawar, Registrar of SPPU.

The new traffic arrangements have caused significant inconvenience for students and staff, especially given the added burden of the ongoing metro work.

DCP of Traffic branch Vijaykumar Magar said, “The Traffic department has reduced signal timing, which has led to vehicles coming in at higher speeds from both sides. As a result, a direct turn into the campus from the circle has become more dangerous. Whereas, the U-turn is not too long.”

Also for the students and staff heading towards University on foot, Magar said, “As a solution, the Traffic department has allotted a waiting time of 20 seconds at the signals for pedestrians and students crossing the road.”
