Pune : Eco-activists plan to do pooja at Ram Zhara to highlight it’s pollution
On January 21, environmentalists are planning to draw attention to the Ram Zhara’s status as one of Pimpri Chinchwad’s most polluted streams by holding a pooja there.
After passing from Chikhali, the stream merges with the Indrayani River. Due to untreated effluents discharged into the flow from warehouses and small industrial units in the Kudalwadi area, it has long been a source of concern.
According to an activist, the date was selected to take place ahead of the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22. This event is being organized by about 26 social groups and NGOs.
According to another activist, there is a mythological belief that the stream got its name when Lord Ram struck an arrow at its origin to initiate its flow while passing through. The stream is also mentioned in an abhang written by Sant Tukaram Maharaj, who is said to have frequently drank water from it while passing the location.
The activist went on to say that although the stream used to be the main source of water for the locals, PCMC is now allowing the discharge of untreated sewage water into it. Additionally, the region’s illicit industries and scrap yards discharge hazardous chemicals into it.
According to a senior PCMC official, they can treat water on the Ram Zhara with a functional STP that has a 3 MLD capacity. In addition, other measures are also being taken.
