On March 12, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) received a notification from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) instructing them to step up their monitoring of the production, sale, use, and exchange of prohibited single-use plastic.

The civic bodies have been directed to establish special teams to carry out the prohibition. According to the Maharashtra Degradable and Non-Degradable Waste (Control) Act, 2006, the Ministry of Forest and Environment enforced the ban.

The board has also mandated that a report on the action taken be provided within ten days of the notification being sent out.
