On June 11, yesterday, the standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation approved the tender of Rs 97.94 Cr under the Central Government’s scheme to take long-term measures to prevent the flood crisis in Pune city.

The PMC is facing intense criticism due to the lack of cleanliness of gutters and stormwater drains caused by the heavy showers. Following that, on June 11, yesterday, the standing committee approved the tender of Rs 97.94 Cr under the Central Government’s scheme to take long-term measures to prevent the flood crisis in Pune city and hence work will be carried out to prevent flooding in various regions of the city.

The central government has developed an Urban Flood Risk Management Plan for seven cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune.

The Pune Municipal Corporation will receive Rs 250 crore over five years to implement the plan, which has been approved by the National Disaster Management Authority. The Pune Municipal Corporation will receive the funds from the 14th and 15th Finance Commission and it will involve fundamental changes to prevent flooding in the city.

The initial project involves installing stormwater drains, and concrete canals, increasing groundwater levels, deepening nullahs, and rainwater harvesting through hill trenches, with a pre-calculation sheet totalling Rs. 147 crores being previously prepared for this purpose.
