TCS Acquires Land in Pune, Vizag to Support OpenAI’s First India Data Centres
22 July, 2026: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has expanded its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure plans by acquiring large land parcels in Pune and Visakhapatnam, a move that could pave the way for OpenAI’s first data facilities in India. While there has been no official confirmation from either TCS or OpenAI, reports suggest the sites are being developed to support future AI and data centre operations.
In Andhra Pradesh, the state government has allotted 200 acres of land to TCS in Anakapalli district near Visakhapatnam. The location is strategically significant as it is close to Google’s upcoming 1 GW hyperscale data centre, which is currently under construction. The proximity is expected to strengthen the region’s position as an emerging AI and cloud computing hub.
Separately, TCS has acquired an 88-acre land parcel in Bopkhel, Pune, for Rs 640.50 crore. The land was purchased from Hemisphere Properties, the public sector company responsible for managing and liquidating the assets of the former Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), now Tata Communications. The transaction received shareholder approval in June.
The latest acquisitions come shortly after TCS launched its Consumer Business Group (CBG) Gemini Experience Center in Kolkata in collaboration with Google Cloud. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, the facility is designed to help businesses build, test and deploy AI-powered solutions across sectors such as retail, consumer goods, travel, tourism and hospitality.
The Kolkata centre is the third Gemini Experience Center established by TCS in India after Chennai and Bengaluru. The company has announced plans to expand the initiative globally, targeting 10 Gemini Experience Centers by the end of 2026, including four in India.
TCS has also said it has developed more than 3,000 industry-specific AI agents using Gemini Enterprise technology, reflecting its growing investment in enterprise AI solutions and digital transformation.
Although TCS has not officially stated that the Pune and Visakhapatnam land parcels will host OpenAI facilities, the acquisitions highlight the company’s increasing focus on AI infrastructure. If the reported plans materialise, the projects could mark the establishment of OpenAI’s first dedicated data centres in India, further strengthening the country’s role in the global AI ecosystem.
