In a harrowing incident, a 27 year old man drove over two dogs while they were sleeping on the road in the Township located at Hinjawadi, Pune on 10th June, Monday.
While one of the dogs succumbed to its injuries, the other one was severely injured due to the accident. Upon being confronted by the Animal Rescue Society of Kolte Public Life Republic, the man denied having done anything of the sort. However, shortly after, the CCTV footage of that night was acquired and it confirmed that the man had indeed run over the dogs in his Tata Harrier.
After he could no longer escape the accusations, the offender is reported to have referred to the infamous Porsche accident that happened in Kalyani Nagar, while saying that there is no value of human life, these were still stray dogs, thus failing to comprehend the gravity of the issue and exhibiting no guilt or remorse for his actions. He also allegedly resorted to white lies and abusive language while trying to evade accountability.
So far, a FIR has been registered at the Hinjewadi police station with the assistance of various Pune-based animal welfare NGOs; around 25 people were present at the police station to seek justice for the dog, who was lovingly called Snowy by the society residents. In conversation with the Animal Rescue society, it was revealed that the accused has been seen driving recklessly on multiple occasions: “He’s infamous within the sector for driving way too fast, irking a lot of residents and endangering kids playing within the society.”
The Animal rescue society urges everyone to not turn a blind eye to this issue since it is happening at a time when cases of reckless driving are being reported at an alarming rate within the city. The team stated, “This comes at the time when every single day there’s news of an accident due to rash driving in Pune. This has to stop, it’s not just dogs, this is a township where even kids play.”
