In a recent report by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), alarming figures highlight the environmental impact of sugar industries in the state. Between May 2023 and June 2024, MPCB issued a total of 20 directives aimed at curbing pollution caused by these industries. Pune emerged as the hotspot with the highest number of notices, totaling seven, followed closely by Aurangabad and Kolhapur with four notices each.
The directives primarily focus on preventing water and air pollution stemming from these industries, which have multiplied across Maharashtra, especially in its western region due to abundant water resources ideal for sugarcane cultivation. Despite their economic significance as a cash crop, sugarcane and the industries processing it have led to a concurrent rise in environmental concerns.
Under the authority granted by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981, MPCB has mandated measures such as wastewater treatment and air pollution control systems. However, the data reveals persistent challenges: many industries have failed to comply, continuing to discharge untreated waste into local water bodies during the rainy season, exacerbating river pollution.
Notably, three industries faced closure directions, underscoring the severity of non-compliance. One such case was reported in Chandrapur, while two others were in Aurangabad. Despite periodic notices, enforcement remains a challenge, often hindered by influential stakeholders.
The situation demands urgent attention to safeguard Maharashtra’s water resources and mitigate air pollution risks posed by these industries.
