Pune Municipal Corporation Begins Preliminary Work on Y-Shaped Flyover At Shastrinagar Chowk
Pune: Work On Flyover And Subway Project At Shastri Nagar In Yerwada Likely To Begin Post Elections, Rs 97 Crores Approved
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun preliminary activities for the construction of a Y-shaped flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on Ahmednagar Road.
According to officials, the flyover project, which has been in planning stages for four years, is set to commence actual construction by September this year.
Currently, consultants are actively engaged in planning and conducting necessary surveys, including traffic assessments and soil testing, based on the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The initial design included road widening to accommodate the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route lane. However, with the dismantling of the Ahmednagar Road BRT on this stretch, approximately 7 meters of additional land has become available, eliminating the need for road expansion.
The revised plan now focuses on a Y-shaped configuration for the flyover and grade separator. Consultants are exploring various design options, with PMC expected to finalize the most suitable proposal. Originally, the project also envisioned a subway alongside the flyover to further ease traffic flow at Shastrinagar Chowk.
One significant hurdle in the project’s path was obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) due to the proximity of the historical Aga Khan Palace. After an audio-visual presentation to the National Monuments Authority in Delhi on April 5, 2024, the NOC was granted by both the central and state archaeology departments, paving the way for the project’s progression.
With these developments, PMC aims to tackle the longstanding traffic issues at Shastrinagar Chowk effectively. The upcoming Y-shaped flyover and grade separator project holds promise to significantly enhance commuting efficiency along Ahmednagar Road, benefiting residents and commuters alike in Pune.
