Construction gathers pace on several stretches as authorities push ahead with one of Pune’s biggest infrastructure projects aimed at easing congestion and improving regional connectivity.

Pune: The Pune Ring Road project, one of Maharashtra’s most ambitious road infrastructure initiatives, is progressing steadily, with work on several construction packages gathering momentum. Authorities are aiming to complete the project in phases, with major stretches expected to be ready by late 2026 and the remaining sections by 2027, subject to construction progress and land acquisition.

The access-controlled ring road is designed to improve connectivity around Pune, divert heavy traffic away from the city, and reduce travel time between major highways and industrial hubs.

According to the latest project updates, Navayuga Engineering has crossed the 50% completion mark on two of its assigned packages. GR Infraprojects and PNC Infratech are also making steady progress, while Megha Engineering is progressing at a comparatively slower pace. Work on Package E4, being executed by Roadway Solutions, has reportedly slowed significantly and is expected to require priority attention from the authorities.

The project includes several major engineering structures, including a 1.5-km viaduct near Ranje village in Bhor, the longest tunnel near Sinhagad Fort in Haveli, and a major bridge across Khadakwasla Lake in Mulshi.

The Pune Ring Road will connect the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Pune-Bengaluru Highway, Pune-Solapur Highway, Pune-Nashik Highway and Pune-Ahmednagar Highway, creating a continuous transport corridor around the Pune Metropolitan Region.

The project has been planned in four major alignments covering areas such as Wagholi, Alandi, Chakan, Pirangut, Chandni Chowk, Katraj, Hadapsar, Ramdara and Theur, among several other locations.

Once completed, the six-lane access-controlled corridor will include two service roads, eight flyovers, four major bridges, seven viaducts, 14 subways and 13 interchanges, helping improve traffic movement and road safety.

Officials believe the project will significantly reduce congestion within Pune city by diverting long-distance and heavy commercial traffic to the ring road. It is also expected to improve connectivity to industrial zones such as Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi, while boosting development across nearly 29 surrounding villages.

Improved road access is also expected to drive residential and commercial growth in areas along the corridor, creating new employment opportunities and encouraging planned urban expansion.

Land acquisition has remained one of the biggest challenges for the project. While substantial progress has been made across several sections, compensation disputes and environmental approvals have delayed work in some areas. Authorities, however, say efforts are underway to resolve pending issues and maintain construction schedules.

With multiple construction packages now showing visible progress, the Pune Ring Road is expected to become one of the region’s most important transport corridors, offering faster travel, improved logistics and better connectivity across the Pune Metropolitan Region.
