Watch: MNS Workers From Pune Assault Chemist For Alleged Insult To Marathi Language, Incident Caught On Camera
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers recently assaulted a chemist in Pune’s Dhanori area for allegedly disrespecting the Marathi language. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The video shows the chemist, who is not from Maharashtra, allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi, asking, “Is it written anywhere that one must speak compulsorily in Marathi?” In response, people warned him of consequences for his actions.
Two days later, MNS workers stormed into the chemist’s shop, beat him severely, and threw ink on his face, demanding an apology for “insulting” Marathi.
Reacting to the incident, BJP MLA Ram Kadam condemned the violence, stating, “Thrashing somebody and taking the law into your own hands is not acceptable at all. The law is equal for everyone. The police will definitely take strong action against the concerned people. This won’t be tolerated. However, Maharashtra’s mother tongue is Marathi and one must not insult the language and should respect it.”
NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Castro expressed concern over the state’s deteriorating law and order, noting, “The condition of law and order is deteriorating every day in the state, and Pune is becoming an epicentre of such incidents. While we are in Maharashtra and must respect the language, you cannot force this on anyone. Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis must take things seriously. Strict action must be taken.”
The incident has sparked a debate on language respect and the limits of enforcing cultural norms, highlighting the tensions between linguistic pride and individual rights.
