Nearly 20 tourists rescued from flooded Sanjay Gandhi National Park due to heavy rains
According to the latest report, nearly 20 trapped tourists were successfully rescued from Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali amidst strong water currents on Saturday, July 20.
The rescue was carried out by forming a human chain with the help of forest department officials. A video of the rescue operation has gone viral, showing the successful evacuation of all individuals trapped in the fast-flowing water. Videos circulating on social media capture the harrowing situation unfolding within the national park. The footage shows tourists, caught in the deluge, forming a human chain to navigate the raging floodwaters.
As Mumbai witnessed incessant rainfall for the past 2 days, the Tulsi Lake, which is situated in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) overflowed on Saturday morning, July 20, at 8:30 am.
Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert and predicted further heavy showers over the city till July 21.
It is worthy to note that Mumbai recorded 52.89 mm of rainfall on Friday, July 19, in 13 hours between 8 am and 9 pm.
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), in Thane, 104.10 mm of rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours. This brings the total rainfall since June 1 to 1,528.41 mm, surpassing last year’s total of 1,501.99 mm for the same period.
It is one of the smallest lakes in the city. Tulsi Lake supplies one per cent of the total water requirement daily in Mumbai.
Its overflow indicates a substantial rise in water level due to heavy rainfall or other contributing factors. While the overflow may help replenish the city’s water resources, it also raises concerns about possible flooding of low-lying areas.
