One of the youngest patients in the nation to receive a bone marrow transplant (BMT) from an unrelated donor is a two-month-old girl who has bubble baby syndrome.

When the infant was 19 days old, Parel’s Wadia Hospital in Mumbai received her from Karwar, Karnataka, and she underwent BMT within the next two months.

Due to their severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), “bubble babies” are born without an immune system, which makes even minor infections potentially fatal.

A senior doctor of the hospital stated that they were able to obtain multiple stem cell matches from donor registries quickly and could perform a bone marrow transplant (BMT) to aid in the baby’s recovery. Rarely do bubble babies receive the diagnosis quickly. They usually appear very late, but in this instance, prompt medical advice from Mangalore and Karwar helped.

First child of the baby’s parents passed away at the age of eleven months following multiple infections. According to the child’s parents, following her death, medical professionals advised them to get tested right away if they had any more children. The second baby’s tests came back positive for SCID, so the doctors decided to send her to Wadia Hospital.

Four days ago, the baby was discharged from the hospital.

According to the CEO of Wadia Hospital, this patient is among the youngest recipients of stem cells from a volunteer donor among transplant recipients nationwide. Her story highlights the value of early diagnosis and the cooperation between health care providers and bone marrow donor databases.
