Pune : Residents of Viman Nagar are in distress as garbage gets burnt frequently in Mhada Colony, causing various issues for residents.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Raja Subramani, Resident of Viman Nagar said, “The garbage burning issue happens a lot of times in the area for the last 2 years. There is no control whatsoever by PMC. I go to the Mhada Colony area for cycling. The air is polluted in the area. The burning incidents happen near public places like bus stands, police stations, schools, etc which affects the health of many people.”

Subramani also took to X to say that “Garbage burning is happening near Mhada Colony. This is being done by security guards, chai tapris, and other individuals in the morning.”

Krupali Bhatt, Resident of Viman Nagar said, “Whenever we go to the airport side, I have seen the garbage burning incidents sometimes. Along with garbage burning, garbage dumping also happens here. It causes a lot of breathing problems for people. Mostly, garbage like plastic, vehicle tires, etc are burnt which, along with bad air, causes a lot of stink.”

Qaneez Sukhrani, Pune citizen activist, said, “The garbage burning is rampant everywhere. It happens frequently. However, the fault is of the PMC supervisors (mukadams) appointed for areas. They are not doing their job. Apart from Mhada Colony, the garbage burning incidents are rampant everywhere in other areas of Viman Nagar.”

Somnath Bankar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, PMC Nagar Road Vadgaon Sheri Ward Office said, “We give notices to people who burn garbage or take action against them by fining the perpetrators, etc.”
