On the occasion of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule’s death anniversary, an award ceremony was organized by Gyan Foundation Pune where women achievers were felicitated from across Pune city.

Amruta Ubale, a resident of Flower Valley society in Wanowrie was felicitated with the ‘Savitri Chi Lek Puraskar 2021’.

The other recipient of the award was Bhagyashree Navatke, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences and Cyber Crime Branch.
The Phule couple continued their social work despite the backlash they received from the society. And they never held contempt towards anyone. If there’s an important lesson to learn from their life’s work, it is to work selflessly and be compassionate towards all.

Amruta Ubale, an animal activist from Pune was honoured for her work in the field of animal rights.

She said, ” I was fortunate to be in a family who nurtured my compassionate side. I remember as a kid I would rescue puppies and kittens and bring them home, provide food and water to them. With time, I reached a stagnation point and had a yearning to do something more meaningful with my life. That is how I decided to take up my passion full time. Since then, I feel working for animals has been my calling. Since the past 10 years I have achieved : a nationwide ban on import of foie gras, a nationwide ban on all performances of bulls, a nationwide ban on the transport of animals across the Indo-Nepal border for animal sacrifice, installation of radar sensor device to save elephants from train accidents, etc. I want to thank the organisers for recognising the efforts which go in this difficult job of saving animals. I take this award on behalf of my team, my family and the supporters of this cause.”

Amruta Ubale on receiving the award said, “I think compassion is a quality inherent in human beings but as we get older we lose this quality due to our conditioning. And as children we extend this compassion towards animals too. I strongly feel that in the future time will come where we will look back in shock to learn that animals were tortured and slaughtered. And I know that with your support this day will come soon.”
