May 13: Leading dairy brands Amul and Mother Dairy have announced a hike of ₹2 per litre in milk prices across key variants, with the revised rates coming into effect from May 14. The increase is expected to impact household budgets as consumers continue to face rising food and daily living expenses.

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, stated that the price revision has been necessitated by a sharp rise in operational and milk production costs over the past year. The cooperative cited increased expenses on cattle feed, packaging materials, and fuel as the primary reasons behind the decision.

According to GCMMF, the price hike translates to an increase of around 2.5 to 3.5 per cent per litre, which it claims remains lower than the prevailing food inflation rate. This is Amul’s first milk price hike since May 2025.

The revised pricing will apply to several popular milk variants, including Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, Amul Shakti, Buffalo Milk, Slim & Trim, Tea Special, and Cow Milk. Under the new rates, Amul Taaza will cost ₹29 for a 500 ml pouch and ₹57 per litre, while Amul Gold 500 ml will be priced at ₹35. Amul Shakti 500 ml will now cost ₹32, Amul Tea Special one litre pack ₹66, and Buffalo Milk 500 ml ₹39.

Mother Dairy has also announced a similar ₹2 per litre increase across its liquid milk portfolio effective May 14. The company said the revision is aimed at balancing rising procurement and operational expenses.

GCMMF further stated that its member unions have increased farmers’ procurement prices by ₹30 per kg of fat, marking a 3.7 per cent rise compared to May 2025. The federation emphasised that nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers goes directly to milk producers, benefiting over 3.6 million dairy farmers associated with the cooperative.

The milk price hike by both Amul and Mother Dairy is expected to affect consumers across major Indian cities, adding pressure on monthly household expenses amid ongoing inflationary concerns.
