A student reportedly slit his wrist and subsequently leaped from the seventh floor of the hostel building located within the IIT Patna campus in Bihar, according to police reports.

The individual has been identified as Rahul Lavari, a native of Hyderabad, who was in his third year studying Computer Science and Mathematics at the institution.

The event triggered a wave of panic across the IIT-Patna campus in the Bihta block.

Immediately following Rahul Lavari’s leap from the seventh floor, a significant crowd of students gathered at the location. They alerted the IIT-Patna administration and local law enforcement regarding the situation.

Authorities swiftly transported him to the nearby Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital.

Both the district police and college officials quickly reached the site to conduct an investigation.

The police reported that the incident took place at approximately 11:30 AM, with the IIT Patna administration receiving notification of the event around 12:00 noon.

Following Lavari’s leap from the building, the authorities transported him to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The police are currently investigating the incident, interviewing the student’s friends at the hostel and college.

The authorities retrieved Lavari’s mobile devices, laptop, and other personal items, forwarding them to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for a thorough examination.

“Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, but further investigations are ongoing. The FSL team has collected blood samples from the incident site, and some WhatsApp chats have also been accessed,” says the police.

An initial investigation has indicated that Rahul Lavari had been experiencing significant stress in the days leading up to the incident. It is reported that he made a tragic decision after considerable contemplation, having cut the veins in his wrist before jumping from the seventh floor of the building to ensure he would not survive.

IIT-P Registrar Sanjay Kumar released a statement indicating that a B Tech student fell from the balcony of a hostel room and was subsequently transported to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The statement lacked details about the student.

“FSL experts reached there and collected samples from the spot. The FSL team will examine the victim’s room to collect more evidence including his cell phone and other gadgets for further analysis. The hostel where the victim stayed has also been sealed. We are investigating the incident from all angles,” says police.

Authorities are keen to understand the motivations behind the student’s drastic action. Law enforcement intends to interview the hostel warden and other students to collect information, and they are optimistic that the victim’s call logs may provide insights into the circumstances. Officials confirmed that the body has been dispatched for a post-mortem examination, and the family has been notified.
