Anand Mahindra Honors Pawan Goenka’s Contribution to India’s Growth
March 27, 2025
Anand Mahindra recently shared his admiration for Dr. Pawan Goenka, looking back at his incredible journey with Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and beyond. Their connection began in the early 1990s when Goenka left his job at General Motors in the U.S. to return to India. Mahindra persuaded him to join M&M as Deputy Head of R&D at the Nashik facility.
However, Goenka was surprised by the basic condition of the R&D setup, making him doubt his decision. But instead of leaving, he took on the challenge and became a key figure in developing the Mahindra Scorpio, a car that changed the company’s future. Over time, he helped build a top-quality R&D center, pushing Mahindra forward in automotive innovation.
A Special Moment for Mahindra
Recently, Mahindra felt a deep sense of pride when he saw Goenka and his wife, Mamta, buying Mahindra’s latest electric SUV, XEV 9e. For Mahindra, this was more than just a car purchase—it was proof of Goenka’s lasting impact on the company and his belief in its vision. Goenka, who once led Mahindra’s innovations, is now enjoying the results of those efforts firsthand.
We are now proud owners of the XEV 9e. The car delivers everything it promised and more. Thank you Mahindra for creating this feature rich, tech-laden masterpiece. @MahindraRise @rajesh664 pic.twitter.com/Db6dm5jEs8

A Remarkable Career
After retiring from M&M in 2021, Goenka took on a new role as Chairman of In-Space, an organization that promotes private sector involvement in India’s space programs. In recognition of his contributions, he was recently honored with the Padma Shri award.
Goenka is highly educated, holding a B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur, a Ph.D. from Cornell University, and has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. His 40-year career includes 14 years at General Motors in Detroit and 28 years at Mahindra & Mahindra.
Continuing to Shape India’s Future
Currently, Goenka is the Chairman of IIT Madras and also leads a government-backed initiative to boost local manufacturing and exports. His influence continues to drive India’s progress in technology and industry, making him a key figure in both the automotive and space sectors.
