Industrialist Anand Mahindra recently took to social media to celebrate Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das’s recent recognition as a top global central banker. On the platform X (formerly Twitter), Mahindra referred to Das’s accolade as winning a “gold medal” in the “Central Bank Olympics,” applauding his performance and noting the appropriateness of his name, which signifies strength.

Mahindra’s post read, “His parents named him well. He’s shown his mettle—his Shakti—to the world… Our Gold medal winner in the Central Bank Olympics…”

Second time in a row

Das received an “A+” rating from Global Finance Magazine in its Central Banker Report Cards for 2024, marking the second consecutive year he has earned this prestigious recognition. This achievement highlights Das’s exceptional leadership at the RBI.

The RBI also celebrated this milestone on X, echoing the Global Finance Magazine’s announcement and underscoring the significance of the rating.

Das’s “A+” rating was shared with Denmark’s Christian Kettel Thomsen and Switzerland’s Thomas Jordan. This distinction reflects his consistent high performance in his role.

How others ranked

In addition to Das, several other central bank governors were recognized with high ratings. The “A” rating was awarded to Roberto Campos Neto of Brazil, Rosanna Costa of Chile, Harvesh Kumar Seegolam of Mauritius, Abdellatif Jouahri of Morocco, Lesetja Kganyago of South Africa, Nandalal Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka, and Nguyen Thi Hong of Vietnam.

Those receiving an “A-” rating include Chea Serey of Cambodia, Tiff Macklem of Canada, Roger Madrigal Lopez of Costa Rica, Héctor Valdez Albizu of the Dominican Republic, Christine Lagarde of the European Union, and several others.

Global Finance Report

Since 1994, the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards have evaluated central bank governors worldwide, assigning ratings from “A+” to “F” based on their effectiveness in managing inflation, promoting economic growth, ensuring currency stability, and handling interest rates.

This year’s report highlighted the successful strategies employed by central bankers to tackle inflation through increased interest rates, which have led to notable improvements globally. Joseph Giarraputo, founder and editorial director of Global Finance, noted that the report honors those who excel through innovative and determined approaches.

Global Finance, established in 1987, has a readership of 50,000 across 193 countries and territories, making it a prominent publication in the financial sector.

Shaktikanta Das’s continued recognition underscores his pivotal role in managing India’s monetary policy and reaffirms his status among the world’s foremost central bankers.
