Anant Chaturdashi, a significant Hindu festival, is set to take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Observed on the 14th day of the Bhadrapada month, this festival marks the conclusion of Ganesh Chaturthi and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, particularly in his Anant form. This year’s celebrations will coincide with the birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma, adding to the festival’s significance.
The day is notable for its unique rituals and ceremonies. Devotees start by performing a ritual immersion of Ganesh idols, signifying the deity’s return to his heavenly abode. This is followed by a day-long fast, during which participants abstain from salt and focus on prayers for prosperity and well-being.
A central element of Anant Chaturdashi is the Anant Sutra, a sacred thread tied around the wrist. According to Kashi astrologer Pandit Sanjay Upadhyay, this ritual involves placing fourteen Granthi Sutras in front of Lord Vishnu and energizing them with Vishnu mantras. The Anant Sutra, tied with fourteen knots, is believed to bring good fortune and divine protection. Men traditionally tie it on their right arm, while women tie it on their left.
The auspicious timings for Anant Chaturdashi this year are from 06:08 AM to 11:44 AM for the puja, with additional significant periods throughout the day for rituals. Devotees are advised to begin the day with a bath, fast, and meditate on Lord Vishnu.
Anant Chaturdashi also has historical roots. Ancient texts recount that during the Pandavas’ exile, Lord Krishna recommended Draupadi and the Pandavas perform the Anant Vrat, a fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu, to overcome their adversities and regain their kingdom. This ritual is believed to offer both spiritual and material rewards.
The festival’s observances not only honor Lord Vishnu but also provide an opportunity for devotees to deepen their spiritual practices and seek blessings for prosperity. With a mix of devotion and festivity, Anant Chaturdashi remains a cornerstone of Hindu religious life.
