The BMC has granted the BYL Nair Hospital permission to start offering aqua therapy to kids with orthopedic, neurological, and developmental issues as well as for post-surgery rehabilitation. With this project, BYL Nair Hospital will become the first civic-run hospital to provide therapy that includes underwater therapeutic exercises.

Aqua therapy is beneficial for conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, juvenile arthritis, spina bifida, scoliosis, Down’s syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and orthopedic or musculoskeletal pain syndrome. Aqua therapy, sometimes referred to as aquatic therapy, offers a unique method for neurorehabilitation in children. Water’s buoyancy lessens the force of gravity, facilitating mobility and reducing joint stress.

The dean of BYL Nair Hospital, Dr. Sudhir Medhekar, emphasised the special method of pediatric neurorehabilitation. The hospital intends to provide aqua therapy to children from low-income families at a discounted cost.

Doctors claim that there is ample evidence of the beneficial effects of aqua therapy on pediatric patients’ motor abilities, balance, and flexibility. Because of its entertaining and calming qualities, children are encouraged to participate actively, which makes it an important element in comprehensive neurorehabilitation treatments.
