Pune: While Baner-Balewadi residents are still grappling with the garbage menace, new garbage dumping and sorting sites are being created in the area, where dry and wet waste is being dumped regularly by collecting agencies.

Ashok Kotamkar, Joint Secretary, Balewadi Welfare Federation said, “This dry and wet waste dumping is not only creating a health hazard for the nearby residents and passersby but is also polluting the atmosphere around the locality. The smell generated by the waste prevents residents and visitors from using the service road, thus putting extra traffic load on the highway and other internal roads in Balewadi. Besides, since Baner-Balewadi is a gateway to Pune city from the Mumbai-Bangalore highway side and is also part of the pilot Pune Smart City Project, this presents a very dirty and unhealthy site to all visitors, including VIP guests and dignitaries who visit Pune regularly from Mumbai, Bangalore etc.”

As per information, while dry and wet garbage is currently being dumped on the highway service road near old Jakat Naka behind PMPML bus depot in Balewadi, a new wet and dry garbage dumping and sorting site is set up by Swachh in the amenity space near Marvel Brisa Society, adjacent to the weekly vegetable market.

On behalf of the Balewadi Welfare Federation, Joint Secretary Ashish Kotamkar raised this issue yesterday at the Monthly Mohalla Committee Meeting at the Aundh Ward Office of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

A letter has been submitted by Balewadi Welfare Federation to Girish Dapkekar, Assistant Commissioner, PMC urging him to look into this matter urgently and shift the garbage dump sites elsewhere at the earliest.

Taking cognizance of this, Dapkekar immediately instructed the relevant officials, including the Swachh representative, to identify alternate sites for garbage sorting and to stop dumping wet waste at open sites in the area.

Federation office bearers Mashalkar, Moreshwar Balwadkar and Ameya Jagtap were present during the meeting.
