Confusion over the festival date has left many wondering when banks will remain closed this Diwali week.

With Diwali just around the corner, people across India are busy planning festive purchases, travel, and financial tasks. However, many are confused about whether banks will remain closed on October 20 (Monday) or October 21 (Tuesday) for the festival.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s official holiday calendarOctober 20, 2025, has been designated as the Diwali bank holiday in most parts of the country. Banks in several states will remain closed on this day for Diwali (Deepavali) celebrations.

Where banks will be closed on October 20:
Banks will remain shut in the following states — Tripura, Gujarat, Mizoram, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Assam, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, West Bengal, Delhi, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.

October 21 closures:
In a few states, including Maharashtra, Odisha, Sikkim, Manipur, Jammu, Belapur, Bhubaneswar, and Srinagar, banks will remain closed on October 21, 2025, for Govardhan Puja and regional Diwali observances.

Other updates:
The share market will also remain closed on October 22 (Wednesday) following Diwali.
As per RBI regulations, all banks—both public and private—are closed on Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.

Even on bank holidays, customers can access online banking , mobile banking, and ATM services across the country. Transactions such as NEFT/RTGS transfers, demand drafts, and card services remain available digitally. Services like setting up standing instructions, applying for lockers, and managing accounts can also be accessed online for convenience

Those planning bank-related work are advised to complete transactions in advance or use online banking services to avoid inconvenience during the festive holidays.
