Postal ballots first, EVM counting from 8:30 AM; early trends expected by 9 AM

Maharashtra is witnessing a crucial political day as counting of votes for the Rahuri and Baramati Assembly by-elections begins today. The process commenced at 8:00 AM with the counting of postal ballots, followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes from 8:30 AM.

The Baramati bypoll was necessitated after the untimely demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. A total of 23 candidates are in the fray, including Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. The counting is being conducted at the Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation godown located in the MIDC area of Baramati.

Meanwhile, the Rahuri by-election was triggered by the death of BJP leader Shivajirao Kardile. BJP candidate Akshay Kardile, representing the ruling Mahayuti alliance, is facing a multi-cornered contest. His key opponents include Govind Mokate from the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction), Santosh Cholke from Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, and rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Raosaheb Khevre.

Election authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the counting process in Rahuri, which will be conducted over 27 rounds. The first trends are expected to emerge around 9:00 AM, with a clearer picture likely by the afternoon.

Both constituencies are being closely watched, given their political significance and the high-profile candidates involved.
