In a targeted enforcement drive against traffic violations around schools, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked 149 cases against vehicle owners and parents for allowing minors to ride two-wheelers.
The surprise drive aimed to curb dangerous driving practices, and errant parents and vehicle owners were fined Rs 5,000 under section 184 of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.
The deputy commissioner of police (traffic) emphasized the importance of sending a strong message to parents and teachers, and the drive covered various areas in Bengaluru, with Talaghattapura having the highest number of cases,
āWeāve booked cases under section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act that provides for imprisonment of six months or up to one year and a fine of up to Rs 5,000, or both. Weāve taken an undertaking from parents that they wonāt repeat the offence. If they do, weāll book cases under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and submit a chargesheet in court,ā he said. āThe purpose of carrying out such drives near schools is to drive home a strong message to parents and teachers.ā
The drive was carried out at VV Puram, Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, Banashankari, KS Layout, Talaghattapura, Adugodi, Madiwala, Mico Layout, Hulimavu, Bellandur, Electronics City, and HSR Layout. Talaghattapura topped the chart with 31 cases, while there was only one in Electronics City.
City-based psychologist Maryanne Pais said it is āthrill-seeking behaviour among teenagersā which makes them ride/drive vehicles.
