Beware: 12 Android apps found stealing user Data, including camera access
In a recent discovery, security researcher ESET has identified 12 Android apps, including 11 messaging apps and one news app, that have been involved in stealing user data. These malicious apps use a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) code, specifically known as VajraSpy, to infiltrate smartphones and compromise user privacy.
The identified apps employ the VajraSpy Trojan virus, functioning as a Remote Access Trojan code, to gain unauthorized access to users’ smartphones.
Data Compromised: Once installed, these apps can steal a range of sensitive information, including contacts, files, call logs, SMS, and even WhatsApp messages. Some apps go as far as recording phone calls and operating the phone’s camera without the user’s knowledge.
Modus Operandi:The apps leverage app permissions to carry out their spying activities, often saving copies of users’ messages without their awareness.
The malicious apps were particularly popular in India and Pakistan, raising concerns about the extent of user data compromise in these regions.
Google’s Action: Google has taken prompt action by removing these apps from the Play Store. However, users who have already downloaded these apps need to manually uninstall them to mitigate potential risks.
