In a momentous announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi disclosed that Lal Krishna Advani, the venerable patriarch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is set to receive the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

The decision to confer this accolade recognizes Advani’s monumental contributions to the nation, his pivotal role in the BJP’s foundation, and his significant involvement in the Ramajanmabhoomi movement.

Advani, whose parliamentary journey commenced in 1970 with his election to the Rajya Sabha, has been a stalwart figure in Indian politics.

Evolving from grassroots activism, he ascended to the position of India’s Deputy Prime Minister. Prime Minister Modi lauded Advani’s exceptional service as the Home Minister and I&B Minister, emphasizing his noteworthy parliamentary interventions marked by profound insights.

The veteran leader’s electoral history is illustrious, starting with his victory in the Lok Sabha election from New Delhi in 1989. He continued to contest from different constituencies, including Gandhi Nagar in Gujarat, winning both seats in the 1991 elections. His last electoral foray was in 2014, where he emerged victorious from Gandhi Nagar.

Notably, Advani played a pivotal role in the political landscape through the Rath Yatra for Ayodhya’s Ram Temple in the early 1990s. This significant event significantly contributed to the BJP’s rise to national prominence.

Despite facing challenges, such as his connection to the Hawala diaries, Advani remained a resilient political force.

His visit to Pakistan in 2005, where he praised Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, stirred controversy within the Sangh Parivar. This incident led to Advani’s resignation as the BJP president, showcasing his commitment to principles even within his own political camp.

The decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Lal Krishna Advani is a testament to his enduring legacy, multifaceted political career, and profound impact on Indian politics. It recognizes a leader who has left an indelible mark on the nation’s trajectory through his statesmanship, strategic acumen, and unwavering commitment to public service.
