Viral video sparks outrage as many call the task humiliating and disrespectful to paid work

A Canadian house cleaner quit her job mid-shift after discovering that her clients had hidden 100 miniature rubber ducks around their home and asked her to find them as a so-called “cleanliness test”. The unusual incident, shared online by the cleaner herself, has since gone viral and triggered a strong public backlash.

According to the viral account, the cleaner arrived at the apartment for what she expected to be a routine cleaning assignment. Instead, she found a note placed beside a jar, informing her that the homeowners had hidden 100 mini ducks across the house. The note instructed her to locate all of them and place them back in the jar to prove that the cleaning had been done thoroughly.

The task was reportedly given alongside a two-hour deadline to complete the cleaning. During that time, the cleaner managed to find around 77 of the hidden ducks, which had been placed in difficult-to-spot locations such as behind cabinets, under furniture, inside plant pots, and taped in bathrooms.

However, rather than finding the task amusing, the cleaner said she felt deeply disrespected. She later explained that the exercise made her feel as though her professionalism and work ethic were being questioned in an invalidating way. Soon after, she decided to stop the job and drop the clients altogether.

The video describing the incident quickly spread across social media, where many users criticised the couple’s actions. Several viewers described the task as humiliating and inappropriate, especially considering the cleaner was a paid professional and not a child being tested on chores.

One user commented, “That’s actually insane,” while another wrote, “Immediate walkout — what kind of humiliation ritual is that?” A third remarked, “That’s the type of thing you do to make sure kids are doing chores, not a fully grown adult you’re paying for a service.” Others pointed out that hiding objects to test cleanliness crossed a line from humour into disrespect.

Some viewers, however, felt the cleaner may have taken the situation too seriously, arguing that the homeowners intended it as a joke. The employers reportedly claimed the duck hunt was meant to be light-hearted and fun. Despite this, the overwhelming response online leaned toward criticism, with many saying intent did not justify making someone feel inferior at work.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion about dignity of labour and boundaries in employer–service provider relationships. Many users stressed that trust and clear expectations are more appropriate ways to assess work quality than surprise tests.

As the debate continues, the viral episode has become a reminder that humour in professional settings can easily cross into disrespect — and that workers are increasingly willing to walk away when they feel demeaned.
