Bombay HC Halts 10-Day Liquor Ban In Pune
Pune: State Excise Department Busts Liquor Theft Racket; Two Tankers Seized, ₹1.19 Crore Worth Material Confiscated
Pune, August 28, 2025 – The Bombay High Court has stayed the earlier order mandating a 10-day closure of liquor shops in Pune’s central areas during Ganeshotsav. Following the stay, District Collector Jitendra Dudi issued a revised directive outlining specific closure days instead.
As per the new order, liquor outlets in central Pune will remain closed on Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27), Gauri Arrival (August 31), Gauri Visarjan (September 2), and Anant Chaturdashi/Grand Visarjan (September 6).
Additionally, on September 7, all shops along the immersion procession routes within Pune Municipal Corporation limits will stay shut until the ceremonies conclude.
The initial decision to enforce a 10-day closure was taken to maintain law and order during the festival, which attracts large crowds from across the state and beyond. However, the Bar and Restaurant Owners’ Association challenged the move in the Bombay High Court, which granted interim relief.
The revised order aims to balance religious sentiments, public safety, and business interests while ensuring smooth conduct of the celebrations.
