Several areas in Pune city including the newly merged villages are facing water scarcity. Tired of the negligence, the residents of various areas filed a petition in the High Court in October 2022.

The Bombay High Court in its hearing held on November 29 has asked the government agencies to file their reply by December 13. The residents had filed a petition regarding inadequate water supply to various areas in Pune city.

Chief justice Dipankar Datta and justice Abhay Ahuja on hearing the petition have directed the Maharashtra government and several other government agencies including Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, Pune Zilla Parishad and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran to file their affidavits by December 13.

In its order, the bench has stated that residents have raised the issue of inadequate water supply which is a serious issue. As per the PIL, areas like Baner, Wagholi, Balewadi, and Hinjewadi are reeling under severe water deficiency which is making residents dependent on tanker waters. The bench in its order informed that the PIL petition filed by the residents must be fairly high on board on December 15, 2022. Considering the time factor, we wish to grant time to the petitioner to file a rejoinder affidavit.

Advocate Satya Muley, leading the case on behalf of the residents stated that the basic 135 litres per capita per day as suggested under the urban water supply is not met too. In his argument, he stated that the residents of certain areas do not even receive 20 litres of water supply per head per day.
