Boxer Imane Khelif Identified as ‘Biological Male’ in Disclosed Medical Report, Harbhajan Singh Responds
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who secured a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games in the women’s category, has been identified as male in a recently leaked medical report.
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was a prominent figure during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite facing scrutiny regarding her eligibility, Khelif achieved a gold medal in the women’s 66kg category, with some labeling her as a biological man.
Following the conclusion of the Games, a fresh controversy emerged when a leaked medical report indicated that Khelif is, in fact, a man.
According to a confidential medal report obtained by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia, it has been revealed that the Algerian boxer possesses internal testicles and XY chromosomes. The report suggests that this condition may be indicative of a disorder known as 5-alpha reductase insufficiency.
This information, while significant, is not entirely unprecedented, as it was earlier revealed that Khelif possesses XY chromosomes. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) made the decision to prohibit the boxer from competing in the World Championship Gold Medal match held in New Delhi.
The report is believed to have been prepared by specialists from the Kremlin-Bicetre Hospital in Paris and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers in June 2023.
It provides a comprehensive analysis of Khelif’s biological characteristics, including the presence of internal testicles and the absence of a uterus. Additionally, an MRI report indicated the existence of a micropenis, which bears resemblance to an enlarged clitoris, as noted by Redux.
This revelation prompted reactions from various figures, including former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who took to social media to urge the Olympics to reconsider the gold medal awarded to Khelif.
5-alpha reductase deficiency (5ARD) is a rare genetic condition that affects sexual development in individuals with 46,XY chromosomes and testes.
Newborns with 5ARD may present with external genitalia that appear more female or nonbinary. However, during puberty, the increase in testosterone levels can lead to the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, such as a deeper voice, enhanced muscle mass, and growth of the genitalia.
