Chandni Chowk flyover: Lack of proper and safe walk ways raises concerns among pedestrians

Pune: The newly inaugurated Chandani Chowk (NDA Chowk) flyover has become a boon for vehicular movement but has turned out to be a nightmare for pedestrians to walk as there is absence of basic walking facilities like footpaths etc on the flyover.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Santosh Shetty, a resident of Bavdhan said, “It is almost impossible to walk on the flyover as there are no walking facilities at all for pedestrians. An underpass or an over bridge or any other safe walking facility must be created here.”
Ramchandra Khaladkar, a resident of Shinde Nagar, Bavdhan said, “Frequently, I have to go to other places by walking from the newly inaugurated Chandni Chowk (NDA Chowk) flyover. A huge number of vehicles on the flyover daily is understandable, however, along with it proper and safe facilities for pedestrians like footpaths, crossing bridges etc must have been made as well. Not a single footpath can be found on the entire flyover which makes it all the more difficult for pedestrians to either cross it or walk on it etc.”
C S Krishnan, another resident of Bavdhan & member of Bavdhan Citizens’ Forum said, “A foot over bridge & other walking facilities are surely required for safe crossing of pedestrians. The concerned authorities are looking after this and planning out concrete steps towards utmost safety and proper facilities for pedestrians.”
Bharat Todkari, Consulting Engineer, NHAI Pune said, “Facilities for pedestrians on the newly inaugurated Chandni Chowk (NDA Chowk) flyover were not there in the initial plan. However, seeing the demand of several people about having safe walking facilities on the flyover, we have sent a proposal to our head office for the construction of a huge foot-over bridge on the flyover for safe crossing and walking of pedestrians. It will be approved soon and the construction work will also begin immediately.”
