Chandra Grahan 2024 Timings: Last Lunar Eclipse of the Year Begins—Sutak Period’s Validity in India
The final lunar eclipse of 2024 has commenced but will its Sutak period be observed in India?
The last lunar eclipse of the year began today at 6:12 a.m. and will continue until 10:17 a.m., making it a total duration of about 5 hours and 4 minutes. This penumbral lunar eclipse, occurring in the astrological sign of Pisces and Purvabhadrapada Nakshatra, is the second of its kind this year.
Lunar eclipses are significant both astronomically and astrologically. They occur when the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, leading to various beliefs and practices surrounding them. Traditionally, during a lunar eclipse, the influence of Rahu and Ketu is said to increase, which is why scriptures prohibit conducting auspicious activities during this period.
Astrologers have clarified that this eclipse will not be visible in India. Due to the eclipse starting at 6:12 a.m., by that time the Moon would have already set in India, with sunrise occurring around the same time. Consequently, the Sutak period, which begins 9 hours before the eclipse, will not be applicable in India. The Sutak period involves restrictions such as closing temple doors and avoiding worship but since the eclipse is not visible here, there will be no need to adhere to these practices. Worship, food, rest and daily activities can proceed as usual and pregnant women need not worry.
The eclipse will be observable in regions including Europe, Africa, the Americas and parts of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These areas will observe the Sutak period. Astrological predictions suggest that this eclipse might lead to natural disasters, fluctuations in financial markets and geopolitical tensions affecting regions like the Middle East, America, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Russia over the coming month. Investors are advised to exercise caution during this period.
Some tips one can follow during this period
1. Keep your mind calm.
2. Chant any mantra or you can chant your Guru Mantra. If you do not know any mantra, then chant Shivay Namah Shivay or Ram Ram.
3. Donate some food items to a needy person
In summary, while the lunar eclipse is a noteworthy event, its effects and associated rituals will not impact India directly.
