OpenAI unlocks its mid-tier AI service at zero cost for 12 months, offering Indians access to advanced tools without subscription fees

OpenAI has rolled out a major update for users in India: the ChatGPT Go plan is now available free of charge for an entire year. The offer covers both new and existing users, giving access to enhanced AI features that normally come at a monthly cost. Although the plan requires a valid payment method during activation, there is no charge during the complimentary 12-month period, and users retain the option to disable auto-renewal at any time.

ChatGPT Go sits between the free tier and the more expensive premium versions. With this plan, users get the latest GPT-5 model, higher daily message limits, image-generation capability, support for uploading larger files such as PDFs and spreadsheets, and the memory feature that tailors responses based on past interactions. In India, the Go plan is usually priced close to ₹400 per month, making the one-year waiver particularly attractive for students, professionals and developers.

Activating the free year is a simple process. Users can open the ChatGPT app or website, sign in or register, navigate to the subscription section, choose ChatGPT Go and follow the steps to verify their payment method. Existing Go plan subscribers will automatically be switched to the free year without needing to cancel. Those who only want to take advantage of the promotional period are advised to check auto-renew settings or set a timely reminder.

The move holds significance because India is among OpenAI’s largest user bases. Offering the Go plan free for 12 months is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand AI adoption in a country already embracing digital transformation. With easier access to advanced tools, OpenAI expects more people to experiment with AI across education, business, coding and creative work.

Not all premium functionalities are included in the free Go tier. API usage remains chargeable, and certain specialised tools and integrations are excluded. After the 12-month period, the plan will convert to a paid subscription unless users opt out.

For millions who were hesitant to subscribe, the free year opens a door to try deeper capabilities without altering their budget. As the company strengthens its focus on India, this gesture may accelerate AI learning, experimentation and home-grown innovation across sectors.
