30 June, 2026: WhatsApp has started allowing users to reserve usernames ahead of the official launch of its new username feature, marking a major step towards improving user privacy on the messaging platform.

The new feature will enable users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers. Instead of sharing a mobile number, users will be able to connect using a unique username, offering an additional layer of privacy, especially when interacting with people for the first time.

According to the company, WhatsApp usernames will not function like those on social media platforms. They will not be publicly searchable or automatically suggested to other users. Instead, usernames will act as a private identifier, helping users communicate while keeping their phone numbers hidden.

Users can choose a username between 3 and 35 characters using Latin letters, numbers, periods and underscores. By opening reservations before the official rollout, WhatsApp is giving users an opportunity to secure their preferred usernames in advance.

To further strengthen privacy, WhatsApp is also introducing a Username Key, which allows users to control who can contact them through their username. Anyone attempting to message a user for the first time via their username will need this key, which can be changed by the user at any time.

The feature will also support creators, businesses and organisations by allowing them to reserve the same usernames they already use on Instagram and Facebook, helping maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms. WhatsApp is also preparing to introduce a business messaging feature that will let customers connect with businesses using usernames instead of phone numbers.

With more than 3 billion users worldwide, including over 500 million in India, WhatsApp said the update is aimed at enhancing user privacy while making it easier for people and businesses to connect securely. The username reservation feature is being rolled out globally, while the full feature is expected to become available later this year.
