The doctor Balaji Jaganathan, who specializes in oncology, is a heart patient and sustained injuries to his upper chest and head. According to Health Minister Ma Subramanian, he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but is in stable condition. A senior doctor mentioned that Dr. Balaji Jaganathan is currently being treated in the ICU following the attack, suffering from injuries to his neck, ear, forehead, back, and stomach.
The attacker has been apprehended, and the incident occurred in the outpatient department (OPD) of the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in the Guindy area of the city.
The suspect, who is identified as Vignesh, 26 years old, attempted to flee after attacking the doctor but was apprehended and turned over to the police.
Police have taken Vignesh into custody, a resident of Chennai, whose mother was hospitalized. He allegedly assaulted Dr. Balaji out of frustration, claiming that his mother was not getting adequate care at the hospital, where she had previously received chemotherapy.
He used a small knife that he had concealed on him, although the Health Minister stated that there was no security failure. Chief Minister MK Stalin has initiated an investigation and has promised medical assistance, along with assurances that such an incident will not occur again.
In a lengthy message (in Tamil) on X, the Chief Minister expressed, “The selfless work of our government doctors in providing treatment to patients regardless of the time is immeasurable. The government will take measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”
This attack in Chennai brings renewed attention to the safety of healthcare workers in their workplaces, an issue that gained national prominence following the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. One suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested in connection with that case.
