Bhopal DSP Santosh Patel has been in search of a vegetable vendor who helped him around 14 years ago. He finally met him recently.

In Bhopal on Saturday, a police vehicle from Madhya Pradesh approached vegetable vendor Salman Khan. DSP Santosh Patel located the individual he had been searching for. Patel recognized him by a distinctive scar on his lips.

The two men embraced, reviving a connection established long ago when Khan’s unexpected gesture of goodwill supported Patel, who was then a struggling engineering student in Bhopal.

“I am the first graduate in my family of 120 people in Panna. I am also the first police officer in my family. I went to Bhopal to study engineering against all odds and then prepared for the MP Public Service Commission. There were days when I did not have money to buy food. Khan was kind enough to feed me tomatoes and baingan. He has a heart of gold,” says Patel.

Both individuals, aged 33, initially crossed paths in 2009-10 when Patel relocated from his hometown of Devgaon in Panna.

Eventually, Patel finished his engineering degree but struggled to find employment. He went back to his village and took a position as a forest guard in Panna. Meanwhile, he continued his studies with the aim of joining the police force and successfully passed the MPPSC in 2017.

“He was just like me – a poor man. We understood each other. I gave him vegetables at times; it’s not a big deal. Why should I earn money by keeping a poor boy hungry? There were many students I gave free vegetables. Patel would even help me with my work at times,” says Khan.

The police officer successfully built a significant social media presence, amassing approximately 2.4 million followers on Instagram. His content includes insights into his experiences as a police officer in rural districts of Madhya Pradesh, poetry shared with farmers, discussions on the challenges faced by the impoverished, and interactions with students from underprivileged backgrounds, during which he provides them with school uniforms and bags.
