Pune: A devastating incident has come to light from Chinchwad, where a 22-year-old woman and her newborn baby lost their lives following complications from an unassisted delivery at home. Officials believe that a delay in seeking proper medical care may have played a crucial role in the tragic outcome.

The woman, a resident of the Chinchwadenagar area, lived with her mother—who works as a domestic worker—along with her brother and sister-in-law. Belonging to a financially struggling family, she was reportedly around six to seven months pregnant when she went into premature labour late on the night of March 24.

The delivery took place at home without any medical supervision. Shortly after childbirth, the woman began to bleed heavily, and her condition rapidly worsened. Realising the seriousness of the situation, her family rushed her to a nearby private hospital. However, due to the severity of her condition, doctors there advised immediate transfer to a government hospital for specialised treatment.

She was subsequently taken to Sassoon General Hospital, where medical staff made extensive efforts to save both the mother and the child. Unfortunately, the woman died during treatment. Doctors continued trying to save the newborn after her death, but the infant also passed away a few hours later.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the woman had kept her pregnancy hidden, and her family became aware of it only when she went into labour. Authorities suspect that the decision to carry out the delivery at home may have been influenced by social concerns, as the woman was unmarried.

A senior police officer said, “There seems to have been a considerable delay in getting medical help. The family may have opted for a home delivery to avoid the situation becoming known publicly, considering she was unmarried.”

Senior Police Inspector Dattatray Chaskar of Chinchwad Police Station confirmed that an accidental death case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing to understand all aspects of the incident.
