The Magarpatta flyover pillars were once infamous as a urinal spot and full of illegal posters. This is perhaps the same everywhere across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. But Members of the ‘Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat’ citizens group decided to clean the mess and beautify the flyover. The team along with local residents in collaboration with the Adar Poonawala Clean City initiative removed all the illegal posters and paan stains, cleaned each of the 26 pillars, and started painting Warli figures over them.

Talking about the initiative, founder of Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat, Wing Commander (retd) Puneet Sharma said, “We conduct cleanliness and beautification drive where we plan to mobilize youngsters. At the Magarpatta flyover beautification, we have got support from the civic body to clean the garbage. The workers of Adar Poonawala Clean City helped with base painting the pillars and citizen artists beautify pillars with Warli art”.

Devendra Jani, an IT professional and Founder of Bee-The Lead is a regular volunteer at the event said, “We are using the art to spread an important message among citizens. One of the pillars portrays the Importance of Bees for food security while the other emphasizes the importance of cleaning the rivers and the need of urban forestation”.

“Sunday mornings are scheduled for this task. We do it early hours to avoid distracting the riders or impacting the weekend schedule”, said core committee member Sathya Natarajan.

Anuja Yadav, member of the citizens’ group, said, “We are looking forward to completing the projects soon with just a few pillars remaining. We provide the paint and brushes. The citizens just need to come with energy and enthusiasm.”
