Justice Chandrachud’s farewell marked not just the end of his tenure but celebrated the profound values his father instilled in him: integrity, independence, and a commitment to justice, now set to inspire future generations.

In a heartfelt farewell address, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared a poignant story about his father’s foresight and commitment to integrity, both moral and intellectual. His father, the late YV Chandrachud, India’s longest-serving Chief Justice offered advice that would shape his son’s career and values. Years ago, YV Chandrachud bought a modest flat in Pune and urged his son to retain it until the last day of his judicial service.

CJI Chandrachud recalled questioning his father’s choice to buy a property in Pune, asking, “When will we ever stay there?” His father explained, “If you ever feel your moral or intellectual integrity is compromised, know that you have a roof over your head. Never allow yourself to be compromised, either as a lawyer or a judge, because you have no place of your own.” This simple but powerful gesture reminded Justice Chandrachud of the importance of self-reliance and upholding ethical standards throughout his career.

Justice Chandrachud also paid tribute to his mother, whose nurturing care supported him through childhood illnesses, and explained the meaning behind his name, “Dhananjay.” His mother told him, “The ‘dhan’ in Dhananjay is not material wealth but knowledge.” This was the legacy his mother hoped he would embrace and pass on.

Reflecting on the openness he’s maintained as a public figure, CJI Chandrachud remarked, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Acknowledging the scrutiny that accompanies such transparency, particularly in the age of social media, he emphasized, “My shoulders are broad enough to accept all criticism.” He credited the support of the bar in navigating these challenges and spearheading numerous judicial reforms.

As Justice Sanjiv Khanna prepares to succeed him on November 11, he paid homage to CJI Chandrachud’s legacy. At a farewell gathering hosted by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Justice Khanna eloquently stated, “When a towering tree in the forest of justice steps back, the birds pause their songs, and the wind moves differently. Other trees shift to fill the void, but the forest will never be quite the same.”
