Pune: Medical professionals have observed a rise in the number of cold and fever cases in the city, which can be attributed to inconsistent weather conditions such as irregular rains, cloudy weather, and fluctuating heat waves. In addition to eye diseases, colds and coughs have also become prevalent in the city. The changing climate has also led to increased cases of diseases transmitted by insects and water.

As per the information received, the hospitals used to record 150–200 patients daily with cases of cold, fever, cough, chills, and headaches. However, this number has nearly doubled. Children and adolescents between the ages of 15 and 24 are more susceptible to falling ill these days.

While talking to Pune Pulse, Dr. Avinash Bhondwe added, ”Kids are prone to colds and coughs due to sudden climate change. I checked patients suffering from colds and coughs and confirmed these cases are viral and not dengue. As we see a decrease in dengue and conjunctivitis cases, these viral cases will come down once the weather conditions get normal. Kids with viral infections should not be sent to school and should take a rest of 3-5 days. Patients should follow the advice given by doctors and follow basic precautions like taking medicines on time, washing hands before eating and touching the face, gargling with lukewarm water, etc.’’

While talking to Pune Pulse, Dr. Amol Deshpande, an ENT specialist, added, ”Rise in cases of cold and cough is due to changing weather conditions. Symptoms are observed, like a running nose, fever, sore throat, and watery eyes. We advise people to take proper rest and drink plenty of water. In case of any symptoms, consult a doctor immediately so further medication can be started as soon as possible.”

Additionally, the irregular rainfall results in the accumulation of rainwater, which leads to mosquito breeding, resulting in more cases of dengue and chikungunya. Moreover, the consumption of contaminated water and unclean food items has contributed to an increase in stomach-related problems. To stay cautious, it is recommended to get vaccinated against the flu. It is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. The inclusion of fresh food enriched in vitamins and proteins is important. Lastly, it is advised not to take any medications without proper medical advice.
