In the last few months, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has received more complaints about auto-rickshaw drivers who have engaged in fleeing, trip refusals, overcharging, and other offenses.

Commuters have requested that the authorities start a helpline number right away because the process for filing complaints is still the same despite promises that it would be launched soon. Additionally, commuters reported that the RTO is still not taking proactive measures to solve the issue. However, RTO sources acknowledged that if a dedicated number of this kind is introduced, they anticipate a backlash from auto unions.

According to an RTO official, they used to receive between thirty and thirty-five complaints per month until a few months ago. There have been nearly 100–150 complaints per month since November of last year. In the last two to three months, they have taken action against about 200 autos. Investigations serve as the foundation for action. In certain instances, driver’s licenses have also been suspended. Offenders often receive fines between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

Another RTO official said that the fact that there are more complaints indicates that people are not being as reserved as they once were. It will be even simpler, though, if there is a phone number or even a WhatsApp number. Its launch has been planned, but a few formalities need to be completed.

According to a daily auto-rickshaw passenger, the authorities promised to launch a dedicated WhatsApp number several months ago so that people could file complaints about auto drivers who broke the law. They still have to, though. Many people find it difficult to use the email address and postal address required for the complaint filing process.

According to commuters, the authorities are not taking proactive measures to address the issue.
